Established in 1936, Medicinal Chemistry discipline in our school was one of the ealiest medicinal chemistry discipline sites in China. In 1948, we became the first university in China that launched medicinal chemistry undergraduate program. Later in 1955, we stared to enroll graduate students. It was one of the first programs that granted both master’s degree and doctoral degree in China, approved by the State Council. A post-doctoral research center was also constructed for this program. In 1959, the chief editor, Prof. Peng Sixun, published the first Medicinal Chemistry textbook in China. In the year of 1989, Medicinal Chemistry was honored as National Key Discipline. There have been a great number of distinguished scholars on the faculty of Medicinal Chemistry, such as Prof. Xu Yu, Lei Xinghan, Yuan Kai, Wang Dianxiang, Huang Lansun, Peng Sixun, and Liao Qingjiang.
Currently, Medicinal Chemistry discipline has established the Key Lab of Drug Molecules Design and Pharmaceutical Property Optimization of Jiangsu Province and The Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Technology Representative Platform of Jiangsu Province, which have become the kernel of The National Key Laboratory of Natural Medicine Active Component and Efficacy. It is also backed by one college technology innovation team of Jiangsu Province and one Qing-Lan Project innovation team of Jiangsu Province.
We now have a total staff of 36, consisting of 11 full professors, 13 associate professors, 7 lecturers, 2 post doctors and 3 graduate assistants. Many have been enrolled in the talents projects at the state level or provincial and ministry level, including one national renowned teacher, one “Ten Thousand Program” scholar, one distinguished young professor of Jiangsu Province, one “New Century” talent, two academic leaders of Jiangsu Qing-Lan Project, one winner of The Sixth Ten-Outstanding-Patent Invention of Jiangsu Province, one Jiangsu distinguished professor, two Jiangsu Six Top talents and two “321 Project” talents of Nanjing.
Many of our faculty also shoulder responsibilities in state level and provincial and ministry level units or academic institutions, including one councilman of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association, one deputy director and one member in Chinese Pharmaceutical Association Medical Chemistry Committee; one executive member and one assistant secretary general of Jiangsu Pharmaceutical Association, one director and one deputy directory of Jiangsu Pharmaceutical Association Medical Chemistry Committee; one executive member of Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission, two experts of National Examination of Licensed Pharmacist; two new drug approve experts in China Food and Drug Administration, two health-care food evaluation experts, two veterinary drug evaluation experts; and 4 on-site drug registration verification specialists of Jiangsu Province.
Department of Medicinal Chemistry has been awarded one First Prize of Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award, seven Provincial-level Science and Technology Progress Awards. In recent five years, it has undertaken around 50 projects, including National New Drug Research & Development Major Science and Technology Projects, key and major projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, the “863” project. It has led 7 new drugs’ designing, research and development as well as done study on the synthetic processes of about 30 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). More than 350 SCI papers have been published on J Med Chem, Org Lett，Eur J Med Chem, Bioorg Med Chem and so forth, and 90 patents have been applied with 50 patents attained, including 6 international patents.
Main research fields:
1.Study on modulators for “protein-protein” interaction
2.Study on new target or new pathway guided tailored medicine
3.Study on active natural products based novel drug
4. Research of new drug synthetic process and quality consistency evaluation for generic drug
